The Suffolk barn that stole its builder’s heart
Willow Barn, in Creeting St Peter, Suffolk, still has some of its original timbers dating back 280 years. It was once part of Clamps Farm and was on the verge of collapse before its conversion in 2006.
“I fell in love and kept it as my home,” admitted Andy Mexome, owner of MexHomes, a barn conversion company. “We decided to make it ours – it is a truly beautiful family home.”
Willow Barn was the fourth barn converted by MexHomes and the Suffolk company has since converted over 40 more.
“Despite it being largely derelict, the old oak frame was in good condition and we were able to salvage some of it,” said Mr Mexome, who has since sold the home to current owners Michelle and Neil Turner. “We built two new wings from green oak. There is a vaulted floor to ceiling window in one of the downstairs reception rooms that allows the light to flood in – it makes an exceptional space.”
Currently on the market with Fenn Wright’s Signature team, the downstairs has four reception rooms, two of which share a joint fireplace, plus a kitchen, utility room and study. The reception hall has a galleried landing and there are four bedrooms upstairs, two with an en-suite.
Current owner, Michelle, mum of 13-year-old twins, said: “The house was everything we had been searching for – and more. It has space and light in abundance and character everywhere.
“It’s a very sociable house. You can cook the dinner and still enjoy having a chat and being part of it all. It is a great space for parties, especially outside in the courtyard. The children have lots of room to explore.
“The garden – and also the house – has beautiful views across the countryside. It was our dream home. We hope the new owners will be just as happy here as we have been.”
The family are moving to Woodbridge to be closer to their sons’ school.
The 2.2 acre grounds feature a small lake with fish, which was once used for washing the farms’ horses. There is also a studio above the double garage with a shower room and sauna plus a balcony overlooking the lake and koi pond.
