New homes piece of Napoleonic history…

Fenn Wright is delighted to present for sale Waterloo Gardens, a small collection of brand new bungalows in Colchester, which were named to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo’s bicentenary, which took place earlier this Summer. 

In June 2015, to mark the Battle’s 200th anniversary, the ASBL ‘Bataille de Waterloo 1815’ created the most impressive reconstructions ever seen in Europe with 5,000 re-enactors, 300 horses and 100 canons. 

When deciding names for the project, local development company Balkerne Gate Developments thought it only fitting to take part in the celebrations and recognise the heroic efforts of all the British troops who fought for their country in a battle that left Europe stunned. 

The new development has resurrected the heroic efforts of one particular soldier, Henry Johnson, who had also been a local farm laborer and was instrumental in determining the future of our regions.

Private Henry Johnston was in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards where he was at the heart of some of the battle’s fiercest fighting against French forces at the farm of Hougoumont on June 18th 1815. The British infantry holding back Napoleon’s advancing forces at this chateau farm was pivotal to the successful outcome of the battle, which saw the end of Napoleon’s reign as Emperor of France. Henry returned home in Aldham, Essex, lived until 1856, and is buried at Fordham, near Colchester.
