Ipswich Heritage Open Days
Heritage Open Days were established in 1994 as England’s contribution to the European Heritage Days. It is a joint action by the Council of Europe and the European Commission with the aim of raising appreciation for Europe’s rich and diverse cultural assets – and their need for care and protection. The central principle of the scheme is to open the doors to historic monuments and buildings, in particular those normally closed to the public, free of charge. European Heritage Days are held annually in September in 50 signatory states to the European Cultural Convention. From the Baltic to the Balkans, from Iceland to the Iberian Peninsula, thousands of events not only highlight the dazzling diversity of Europe’s heritage, but also its intercultural links.
Buildings opened in and around Ipswich included:
• Freston Tower
• Broomhill Swimming Pool (closed for 12 years)
• Ipswich School
• Woolverstone Hall (Ipswich High School for Girls)
• The Old Custom House
• The Waterfront Building (University Campus)
• St Margaret’s Church
• St Peter’s by the Waterfront
A free and interesting property event worth pencilling into your diary for 2015.
