Cosy up in front of the fire this winter

In the depths of winter, there is no doubt that the powerful heat from a fire is the perfect way to keep our homes warm and cosy. The role of a fire isn’t just about heat; flickering flames can help to create a welcoming atmosphere and stunning focal point that could help to sell your home.

Fireplaces appeal to all the senses, with the illumination of a flame lighting a room on a cold winter’s day and smoke gently pluming out of the chimney. There’s nothing more inviting than returning home from a winter walk to the ambience and comfort of a real fire.

Open fires

Nothing beats a classic fireplace or inglenook with a roaring log fire, mesmerising flames and delicious smoked aroma that fills the entire house. Experts have very strong opinions about which wood-cocktail creates the best scent and crackling flame.  From wild cherry, to apple or pear, fire and wood connoisseurs will freely offer their recommendations on the most superior burn.

A splendid fireplace makes for a natural focal point in any room; with its gravitational pull to create a wonderful space to entertain, or cosy-up in front of, on any chilly day or night.

Fireplace efficiency can be a concern however as open fires are unable to channel all the heat produced into the room.  As the fire draws up the chimney, it tends to take some of the heat from the fire with it. Firebacks can remedy this with both their heat absorption and radiation traits. The iron plates absorb a portion of the heat that may otherwise have been lost and reflects it back into the room, increasing efficiency by up to 50%.

Wood-burning stoves 

Contemporary wood-burners are becoming increasingly popular due to their efficiency and ability to deliver a constant source of radiant heat which can also be regulated – an advantage over an open fire.

They also come with an element of comfort for those with children and pets, as they can be left to burn without constant supervision as the wood is shut away in the cast iron casing. Whilst wood-burning stoves do not have the same atmospheric impact and create a less formal focal point as an open fire, they can be fitted into more awkward spaces and corners as flues can be diverted at angles to reach the roof. Wood-burners are also favoured for their minimal mess and fuss factor.
