Apartments at former Co-op site in Colchester fully let
We are pleased to share that we have completed on the letting of 24 residential apartments at a landmark building in the St Nicholas Quarter of Colchester.
The former East of England Co-op department store on Long Wyre Street has undergone a comprehensive programme of regeneration, transforming this empty property into 24 apartments, with plans for restaurant and retail units below. The Co-op’s investment will hugely benefit the area with the creation of jobs and contemporary living accommodation, and there are also plans by the owners of Priory Walk to rejuvenate the street.
A planning statement regarding the scheme said ‘Opening a restaurant onto St Nicholas Square is considered to be a significant benefit and will assist in reintroducing footfall and vibrancy to this part of Colchester. It represents an opportunity to assist regeneration in this key area of the town centre, whereby historic assets can be enhanced and fully utilised in order to maximise their potential.’ Funding for the revamp of St Nicholas Square was secured by the partnership We Are Colchester as part of a bid for £25 million from the Government’s Town Deal fund.
Nick Denny, Joint Chief Executive for the East of England Co-op commented “Long Wyre Street has a special place in our history, so we were incredibly pleased to have brought our plans to fruition and look forward to providing a new destination for residents and visitors to Colchester”.
All of the studio, one and two bedroom apartments are now let and over half are already occupied, with the remaining units due for occupation by the end of this month. Two of the apartments have been let in conjunction with Colchester Borough Council. Each apartment has been finished to a high standard with a stylish kitchen, double glazed windows, contemporary bathroom suite, bicycle storage and some feature balconies with rooftop views of the town.
