The Giant’s House, a delightful cottage which Fenn Wright has recently sold, is packed with fascinating history – the sort of thing national property journalists love to write about. In fact, the Sunday Times and Evening Standard snapped its story up as soon as it launched to market! This makes Public Relations (PR) a powerful marketing tool for our vendors, offering them access to the lucrative National, London and International markets to attract competitive interest from around the globe.
The Giant’s House is a classic example of how an interesting home can excite national press and by combining this PR service into our marketing strategy, we were able to deliver a sophisticated marketing strategy to attract significant interest and the best price for our vendor.
Here is a little bit more about The Giant’s House and its history, and why it appeals to those who love living in the countryside:
The Giant’s House is a historical country cottage in Suffolk that was named after the renowned circus performers, George Page and his brother Meadow, otherwise known as the ‘Newbourne Giants’, who remarkably stood at 7’7″ and 7’4″ and lived at the property in the 19th Century. As a result, the cottage inspired the novel ‘The Giant of Oldbourne’ which was written in 1926 by John Owen.
The cottage occupies an idyllic position at the centre of Newbourne with spectacular views across fields to the front and a woodland nature reserve.
Nichola Faulkner at Fenn Wright Kesgrave comments; “This home is perfect for nature lovers with a stream in the garden and a nature reserve next door. It combines beautifully ‘old’ house charm with ‘new house warmth’ with its history embedded within every wall as well as the local area. In fact, as you leave the local church, the gravestone of George Page can be found as the third one along on the east side of the path. It is his gravestone, which became the inspiration for the novel.”
The Giant’s House is approached via a gravelled front garden, which is adorned with an established magnolia and wisteria and bordered by a picket fence and gate. A red brick path leads to the charming rustic oak front door.
Internally, the original house has been gently remodelled to provide a large sitting room with a wood-burning stove and full width French doors, with lovely views towards the natural spring-fed stream that is an enchanting feature of the garden.
Further accommodation on the ground floor includes a dining hall with an open fire, an inner hall with cloakroom, and a comfortable light-filled farmhouse style kitchen with views to the front and French doors to the garden patio. The kitchen provides access to a useful garage with a remote-controlled up-and-over door. Above the garage, up a private staircase from the kitchen, is a triple aspect sitting room. This could alternatively serve as a fourth bedroom.
On the first floor is the master bedroom with dressing area and en-suite wet room. In addition, there are two further double bedrooms and a family bathroom.
The gardens extend to about 1/3 of an acre and are planted with established beech, hazel and willow trees and are bounded by a natural spring and ancient hawthorn and blackthorn hedge. A vintage summerhouse provides useful storage and a new shed (5m x 3m) stands at the end of the garden. The gardens have been landscaped to provide a large patio area of York stone outside the kitchen and living room French doors, with a curvy brick and gravel path leading to a bridge over the spring, to the natural garden beyond. A second patio area is positioned next to the spring and enjoys the sun all day and views of the village church.
