Is there a difference between an apartment and a flat? Potato potato apparently – the word apartment, used most commonly in the US, comes from the Italian word ‘appartamento’ and was originally used to describe a set of rooms in a house which were used exclusively by one person. A flat is the British equivalent – it comes from the Old English work ‘flett’, meaning floor and is said to refer to a suite of rooms including a kitchen and at least one bathroom situated in a building with multiple such suites.
Just to make it more confusing, the Americans have a tendency to use the word flat to give a more upscale feeling to a property whilst in Britain we tend to use the word apartment to indicate that a property is luxurious.
